Genetics  

DDr Child is a University of Toronto medical graduate specialising in clinical genetics, and based in the Cardiovascular and Cell Sciences Research Institute, St George's, University of London, as Reader in Cardiovascular Genetics. She has a special interest in Marfan syndrome with 25 years' experience in diagnosis and management of, and research into, its many manifestations as well as overlapping disorders scoliosis, ascending aortic aneurysms, dislocated lens and glaucoma.

She is author of over 100 scientific papers and principal genetic advisor to the national AIMS Trial of Irbesartan in Marfan syndrome to preserve aortic wall architecture, a trial involving 23 centres in the UK. In her role as Medical Director of the Marfan Trust charity she is responsible for planning and overseeing the research programme aimed at discovering improved treatment for Marfan syndrome. Genetic counselling based on Marfan gene mutation involves prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis advice.
