Cardiology

Francis Murgatroyd is the director of the arrythmia service at King's College Hospital in London. His first degree was from Cambridge University and he qualified medically from Oxford University in 1985. He trained in cardiology in London and in Leicester, and has specialised exclusively in arrhythmias for the last 15 years. After a senior fellowship at the University of Western Ontario, he was apopinted in 2000 as a consultant cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, before moving to King's in 2004.

Dr Murgatroyd is on the council of Heart Rhythm UK (the body representing arrhythmia specialists), the medical executive of the Arrhythmia Alliance, and directs the national device and albation databases. He is best known for research into atrial fibrillation and pacemaker/ device therapy, and has published over 50 papers and three books in these fields.

 

Special interests

Cardiac arrhythmias (including atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, sudden cardiac death) and their treatment (electrophysiologic study, catheter ablation, implantable pacemakers and defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization therapy).
