Profile	Dr Schumacher qualified in medicine from Hamburg University in 1994. He completed his medical thesis on neonatal septicaemia in 1995 (University of Hamburg, Germany) and his PhD on Sepsis and Fluid Resuscitation in 2004 (University of Luebeck, Germany). He became a specialist in Anaesthesia in 1999, and a specialist in Intensive Care Medicine in 2000. In 2005 Dr Schumacher was appointed as a consultant anaesthetist at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and became Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London in 2006.
