Personal Details

 Dr. Justin Hughes is a keen sportsman and ex rugby player. He played prop and hooker for 20 years. He captained a number of clubs and teams. Now retired from rugby, Justin is a keen cyclist and practices Wadu Ryu Karate. Justin’s other interests include playing the piano and acoustic guitar.


 Medical Training


Dr. Justin Hughes qualified from Imperial College of Medicine in 2000. He completed his Basic Surgical Training in 2005. He obtained a Masters in Surgical Technology from Imperial College. His research looked at Spinal Surgery and Positional MR Imaging for which he was published in Spine Journal. Justin qualified as and worked for a brief period as a General Practitioner. He was then selected to for specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). He completed the training scheme in 2009. During and since that time he has trained and worked with the:

  • Olympic Medical Institute
  • Chelsea FC Academy
  • Harlequins Rugby
  • UK Athletics>England U18 Men’s Rugby Doctor Military Elite Sports Injuries Clinic – Clinic Lead England Women’s Rugby Doctor (World Champions)


As well as his Sports Medicine expertise, Dr. Hughes is also a dual accredited Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine. For this additional specialty he trained and worked at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore – Spinal Injuries Unit The Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney DMRC Headley Court – Military Battle Trauma Rehabilitation Consultant

Medical Education and Leadership

Justin is a leader in his specialty and is heavily involved in the national and international development of his specialty and in the training the next generation of Sport and Exercise Medicine consultants.

Current and previous roles include:

  • Chairman of the London SEM Training Committee for Specialist trainees 2013-15
  • Vice President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine
  • Chairman of the National Specialist Advisory for SEM.2015-16 Membership of Professional Associations Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK)
  • Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners Diplomat of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
  • Member of the British Society of Rehabilitation
  • Member of the Royal Society of Medicine
