Palliative Care and Symptom Control

Pain Medicine

Dr Shaheen Khan is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

His areas of expertise in palliative care include:

  • Pain management and complex symptom control
  • Advance care planning
  • Patient safety and risk management
  • Postgraduate medical education
  • Service development and clinical leadership

Dr Khan provides a broad range of expertise in the management of medical problems within the context of advance disease. He treats patients facing serious illness, working closely with their medical team, relatives and carers with an approach to palliative care which is far broader than simply end of life care, a somewhat traditional view of this field of medicine. Providing a more holistic approach, Dr Khan’s treatment of patients includes an assessment, and treatment of pain, symptom control, physical, psychosocial and spiritual assessment, as well as relief from distressing symptoms. He also evaluates and manages non-pharmacological measures such as lifestyle, nutrition, physical environment and interventions, as well as providing advice and support for carers.

Dr Khan has recently been appointed as Training Programme Director for the KHP Palliative Medicine StR training programme in London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Dr Khan regularly runs courses and seminars for medical practitioners, community and hospital staff on a range of issues about palliative care.

Dr Shaheen Khan graduated from Guy’s, Kings’ and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2003, having also been awarded a first class honours degree in BSc Neuroscience in 2000. He completed the MSc in Palliative Care from Kings’ College London in 2010 and in 2011 he was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership.
