Mr Jonathan Lucas qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University in 1988. He undertook basic surgical training on the St Bartholomew’s Hospital rotation gaining the FRCS(Eng) in 1992. He pursued higher surgical orthopaedic training on the South-East Thames Orthopaedic Rotation gaining the FRCS(Orth &Tr) in 1998. He gained specialist training in spinal surgery as a fellow at The Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and as a British Orthopaedic Association travelling fellow to the USA, specializing in Paediatric and Adult deformity surgery. He was appointed as consultant orthopaedic and spinal consultant to Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals in 1999. Jonathan is Lead Clinician for Spinal Surgery at Guys and St Thomas’ and the Evelina Children’s Hospitals, appointed in 2006.

Jonathan has an active research interest in spinal surgery concentrating on blood conservation techniques in spinal surgery and the measurement of outcomes for spinal surgery, publishing in peer review journals and presenting at National and International meetings. He is the editor of a major surgical text book, New Aird’s Companion to Surgery and a chapter author to Browse’s Surgical Symptoms and Signs and contributed to two further books (Critical Care Medicine at a Glance, 2nd and 3rd Editions and French’s Index of Differential Diagnosis, an A-Z (forthcoming.). He is author of over 45 peer reviewed publications and presentations. Jonathan is also a former Chairman of AO SPINE UK. He is a member of Complex Spinal Surgery CRG committee and a member of the British Association of Spine Surgeons, British Scoliosis Society, European Spine Society, North American Spine Society and the British Orthopaedic Association.

Jonathan’s interest are in the management and surgery of paediatric and adult spinal deformity, the management of spinal sepsis, tumours including metastatic disease of the spine, trauma and degenerative conditions of the spine.
