  • Endobronchial Ultrasound EBUS

    Need to know

An endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is used to take tissue samples from the lungs or the lymph nodes in the chest. It may be used to check for lung cancer, other cancers that are suspected of spreading to the lymph nodes, lymphoma and other non-cancerous conditions such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis.

  • Bronchoscopy

    Need to know

Your consultant may recommend that you have a bronchoscopy for various reasons, from investigating a persistent cough to taking a mucus sample if you have a lung infection. There are two different types of bronchoscopy: flexible rigid. A flexible bronchoscopy is more commonly used.

  • Bronchial challenge test

    Need to know

Asthma is a common condition that causes lung inflammation and makes it difficult to breathe. This inflammation is sometimes caused by allergies or overly sensitive airways. A bronchial challenge test ‘challenges’ your airways by asking you to inhale doses of a powder and then measures your lungs' reaction.

  • Spirometry

    Need to know

Spirometry assesses whether your airways are obstructed or if the movement of your lungs is restricted. It may be recommended if you're experiencing breathlessness or a persistent cough, or if you may have asthma. Spirometry is also used to monitor treatment for an existing condition.
