New dietetic survivorship service

People diagnosed with cancer receive a wealth of support from a variety of health professionals throughout their treatment. Recent studies show that there are benefits of providing ongoing support beyond treatment, once in the recovery stage. Consequently there has been more focus on the development of survivorship services across the UK over recent years.

At London Bridge Hospital, our oncology patients all routinely receive valuable support from Registered Dietitians throughout their treatment journey. To build on this the Dietetic Department are now launching a dietetic survivorship service to help ensure that people receive the nutritional care they require following the completion of their cancer treatment. This is in accordance with the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommendations that specify that all cancer survivors should receive nutritional care from an appropriately trained professional.

Due to the demanding nature of cancer treatment, the side effects, and its interruption to daily life, a change in both weight and lifestyle can transpire. Evidence suggests that healthy diet and lifestyle changes are associated with reduced risk of cancer reoccurrence, as well as reduced risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. It is often an optimal time to address healthy diet and lifestyle changes once in the remission stage, when people tend to be most motivated to reassess their lives and make important healthful changes.

At London Bridge Hospital, our friendly team of Dietitians provide flexible outpatient clinics, offering one-to-one consultations lasting one hour. This service is now also available at the newly refurbished Sevenoaks Medical Centre. We offer flexible appointment times Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm. The consultations involve a full dietetic assessment, tailored dietetic advice and an opportunity to address nutritional concerns, with the aim of supporting patients to make long lasting, beneficial dietary and lifestyle changes. Health insurance companies will frequently authorise cover for Dietetic consultations if referred by consultants or by GPs with consulting rights. We also offer discounts for our self-pay patients.
