London Bridge Hospital is launching the first formal screening service for ovarian cancer, a disease that’s often discovered when it has reached an advanced stage.
Ovarian cancer is less common than breast or colon cancer but is more lethal. Of the 7000 new cases discovered every year, six thousand patients cannot be cured. The survival rates are worse than all other gynaecological cancers.
The disease, known as the silent killer, is difficult to spot in its early stages and frequently its symptoms in later stages are misdiagnosed.
Now, one of the UK’s leading authorities on the disease, gynaecologist, Mr David Oram, has begun a cancer screening service at the London Bridge Hospital diagnostic and outpatient centre at 31 Old Broad Street.
One of Britain’s leading specialists in the treatment of severe arrhythmia, Dr Richard Schilling, has developed a new and more effective procedure at London Bridge Hospital.
It is the first time this new dual procedure has been performed worldwide. It involves a normal radio frequency ablation operation combined with the cryo ablation procedure which increases the effectiveness of the treatment.
This system is designed to give our Surgeons accurate and stable control of catheter movement during complex cardiac procedures performed to diagnose patients suffering from abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias.

The
The London Bridge Urology department are pleased to announce the launch of Brachytherapy in March 2009 (A popular alternative to surgery and radiotherapy for patients with early, localised, prostate cancer)
What is Prostate Brachytherapy?
Brachytherapy is radiation treatment that is given inside the patient, as close to the cancer as possible. The radiation is delivered inside the body with radioactive isotopes (chemical elements), inside delivery devices such as wires, seeds, or rods. These devices are called implants. The radiation dose is concentrated on the cancer cells and less damage is done to the normal cells near the cancerous growth.
The Medical Admissions Service is a new service that is being offered here at London Bridge Hospital.
It is an instant, expert referral system for patients who require an urgent, general medical consultant opinion.
The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with access to six consulting physicians who will be working on an on call basis. In urgent cases, patients will be admitted immediately, following assesment. A private ambulance is available for transport to the hospital and the service also offers self-pay packages for non-insured patients.
The aim of minimal access spinal surgery (MASS) is the reduction of 'collateral damage' to muscles, ligaments and soft tissue associated with traditional spinal surgery whilst obtaining the same clinical outcomes of traditional open procedures. The technique has been developed to complement minimal invasive spinal surgery (MISS) as the latter does not allow for direct visualisation of the spine. In that regard these two techniques DO NOT alter the indications or goals of surgery.
