Self Pay Information

Going into hospital is a worrying prospect at the best of times, but if you are paying for yourself, your anxieties can be increased if you are unsure about how much your treatment is going to cost.

We are now making it even easier for patients to access the exceptional quality of care provided by HCA International hospitals in central London with self pay packages. We are offering this self pay option to patients requiring treatment at the London Bridge Hospital.

A self pay package gives patients peace of mind by knowing in advance exactly how much treatment will cost. All self pay packages include surgery, prosthesis, nursing care, accommodation, patient meals, in-patient physiotherapy, medication while in hospital, plus 5 days take home medication, removal of stitches (if required).

Our staff will be able to give patients a ‘guide’ price even if they haven’t seen a consultant, but a referral letter from their GP will be required before an appointment with a consultant can be arranged. We will provide a written estimate to every enquirer listing exactly what is included in the package price.

For further information please contact our Enquiry Helpline on - +44 (0)20 7234 2948

What is a self pay package?

When the Enquiry Helpline receives a general enquiry from either a patient or a patient’s relative we will offer a package price based on procedure code and length of stay.  This will be confirmed in writing.

When a reservation is made our Reservations team will pass the relevant information on to our Enquiry Helpline who will write to the patient with the package details.

We have over 600 procedures where we can give you a guide price at the outset - this includes accommodation, nursing, theatre fees, drugs and dressings. Treatment under Self Pay Care is dependent on a Pre-assessment, after which you will be sent an offer letter detailing exactly what is included in your Self Pay Care package.

If you decide to go ahead with treatment under this scheme, we then ask you to let us have payment on or before admission. Generally, you will then only be asked to pay for personal expenses such as telephone calls whilst you are in hospital. These will be charged to your account for payment before leaving hospital.

Self Pay Care is offered at the discretion of the hospital and may not be available in all instances. If we are not able to offer you a Self Pay Care package, the hospital will generally be able to offer you an alternative Self Pay option.

What about consultants fees?

All medical fees relating to specialist consultations and treatment are separate from the hospital charges. Your consultant will require you to settle these directly.

Will my insurance cover me?

The first thing you have to remember about insurance companies is that they need you to contact them before you come into hospital, they may allocate a claim number for us and a claims form for you to hand over to the consultant for his signature. You may have limits on your policy, or excesses that you need to check out first. It is vital that you confirm cover before you commit yourself to the bill. Full insurance details must be given to the hospital registration staff at or before time of treatment for direct settlement. While the hospital will invoice your insurance company or sponsor directly, it is your responsiblity to ensure that claims are processed promptly. Should insurers, sponsors or guarantors decline or delay payment, you will be invoiced for immediate settlement.

What if my company are settling my account?

HCA International has credit arrangements with some companies. In such cases the patient must provide a letter of guarantee authorising payment of the tests or treatment to be carried out.

What about the extras bill?

By extras bill we mean those personal items not covered in your medical invoice, for example guest meals, telephone charges and newspapers. Some insurers will not cover the cost of items such as crutches or splints, neck and knee braces because they are classed as aides to mobility.
