Blood is composed of a variety of cells that are produced within bone marrow. There are red blood cells, which transport oxygen around the body; white blood cells, which defend against infection; and platelets, which help to control bleeding. The branch of medicine relating to diseases of the blood and bone marrow is called haematology. As blood performs a vital function throughout the entire body, haematology plays a key role in the treatment of a wide range of diseases.

London Bridge Hospital has the expertise and equipment to provide effective treatments for a large number of disorders that can impact on blood cells, some of which are described here:

  • Anaemia

A low level of red blood cells leads to an inadequate oxygen supply around the body.
  • Differential test

A white blood cell analysis to diagnose an illness affecting the immune system.
  • Haemophilia

A genetic disease that causes the blood to be unable to clot normally.
  • Hughes syndrome

Clots (thromboses) develop in blood vessels.
  • Leukaemia

A malignant condition affecting immature blood-forming cells in the bone marrow.
