Mammography uses low dose x-rays to gain high-quality images of breast tissue. A mammography exam (mammogram) is the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early. Mammography is the primary diagnostic imaging tool for woman over the age of 35 if they are symptomatic, or over 40 as a screening test. Typically, four images are taken (two of each side) compressing the breast between two plates for several seconds. This can cause mild discomfort, but that should not persist.

London Bridge Hospital now has 3 sites which offer mammography: Docklands Healthcare at Canary Wharf, 31 Old Broad St. (OBS) in the City, and 29 Tooley St. at London Bridge Hospital (LBH). As a diagnostic centre we offer One-Stop Breast clinics at LBH and OBS, with the availability of triple assessment and results on the same evening. The mammography team are all renowned specialists in their field.

Both OBS and LBH now have the newer digital technology as opposed to the analogue film screen combination. Instead of an image being processed onto film, digital mammography takes an electronic image and stores it onto a computer. Digital mammography is significantly better than film mammography for screening woman either under the age of 50, with very dense breasts or pre or peri-menopausal women of any age.
