Pain management combines physical, emotional, intellectual and social skills to lessen the suffering experienced by a person with chronic pain. It is very unlikely that pain management will eliminate your pain. Instead, pain management helps you to regain control of your life and enhance the quality of that life despite the pain.

The techniques used in pain management depend on the nature and severity of the pain. In addition, patients will often be experiencing more than one pain, requiring a combination of approaches. Techniques include,  muscle relaxation, breathing relaxation, activity pacing and strategies to address anxiety and overcome negative pain-related thinking.

Instead of seeing pain as a problem that doctors must solve, pain management allows patients to discover their own role in taking control of their pain and their life. Pain management can provide a route to a life that circumvents the distress and disability that pain may otherwise cause.
