London Skull Base Centre

The London Skull Base Centre is the product of a collaboration between London Bridge Hospital and the surgeons and

physicians of the King’s Health Partners Skull Base Service. The team consists of Consultants from Guy’s Hospital and King’s

College Hospital, working together to provide the best possible management of complex skull base conditions.

The skull base area spans from the brain, encompassing the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, orbits, the temporal bone with its

hearing and balance organs, and associated structures below. The bony plate is traversed by major vessels and nerves and is

one of the most demanding anatomical areas of the body. The most common disorders involving the skull base are tumours,

often presenting with cranial nerve weakness.

While many tumours are histologically ‘benign’, all are potentially life-threatening, and are associated with the potential for

significant morbidity – both from the disease process itself, and sometimes the treatment.

The diversity of tumours in this area challenges pathologists, radiologists, oncologists and surgeons alike. The skull base is an

area often damaged in major head trauma, with resulting cranial neuropathies, CSF leaks and ensuing intracranial infection.

Surgery in these complex cases is said to require four hands and two brains – something that, in practice, can only be

achieved through close teamwork.

The team at The London Skull Base Centre is made up of Ear, Nose and Throat and Neurosurgical Consultants, with years

of highly specialised training and experience in the surgical and non-surgical management of these conditions.

This allows us to work with our patients, and guide them to the best possible individualised

treatment programme.

This may involve surgery, or specialised forms of radiotherapy such as Gamma Knife or

CyberKnife

®

treatment, but for many patients the best way to maintain quality of life is

to do nothing.

Our philosophy is to work in partnership with our patients to allow an informed

choice to be made between all of the latest treatment options.

Clinical management is supported by a close working relationship with specialised

Consultants in Neuropathology and Neuroradiology, as well as the support of a

dedicated team of nursing, physiotherapy and audiology staff.
