London Pacemaker and

Defibrillator Centre

Pacemaker implantation is now one

of the most common forms of heart

surgery, with over 40,000 people having

the device fitted in 2010 in England alone,

and this number is only set to rise further.

Here at London Bridge Hospital, we

pride ourselves at always being at the

forefront of technological developments.

As such, we are delighted to launch the

London Pacemaker and Defibrillator

Centre, located within our newly-

refurbished Cardiology Department.

Not only do patients have access to the

latest devices from the leading cardiac

device manufacturers, such as MRI-

compatible pacemakers and wireless

devices; we can also provide an unrivalled

facility, offering the highest quality care.

Our world-renowned Consultants, all of

whom specialise in cardiac devices, have

extensive device implantation experience,

whilst all of our specialist Cardiac

Physiologists have gained accreditations

from the International Board of Heart

Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) – recognised

internationally as the most prestigious

qualification in the field.

The initial prospect of having a pacemaker

or defibrillator can be challenging to come

to terms with; therefore we ensure that

all of our patients are well informed every

step of the way. By providing as much

assistance as each patient requires, we

aim to make the experience as seamless

as possible. We feel that this ongoing

support is of great benefit, as pacemaker

patients must be seen every year, and

defibrillator patients every six months;

so continuity of care is vitally important.

Every patient needs to have their

pacemaker programmed optimally, in order

to gain all the benefits the device has to

offer. For some patients, this may require

several appointments; therefore, not only

are flexible appointments available during

clinic times (8am-6pm, Monday to Friday),

but also, patients have access to pacing

specialists out of hours, every day of the

year, to answer any device-related queries.

Furthermore, the vast majority of devices

that are implanted at our Centre have

the capability for convenient remote

home monitoring. This means that a

patient can have a monitor linked through

their phone line, and information can be

automatically downloaded from their

device directly from their own home

to the Centre. We check all our home-

monitored patients daily, to ensure that

their devices are working optimally. This

form of monitoring greatly increases the

standard of care we can offer, and can

act as an early warning system if a device

or lead becomes faulty.

Regardless of whether patients are

already registered with a Consultant

Cardiologist at London Bridge Hospital,

they are still encouraged to have their

device checked with us – they can

be quickly and easily directed via our

GP Liaison Team. We look forward to

welcoming patients old and new to the

London Pacemaker and Defibrillator

Centre.
