A barium enema is used to enable specialists to investigate medical problems in the colon. As the gut (intestines) does not normally appear clearly on x-ray images, a liquid containing barium, through which x-rays will not pass, is placed in the gut, allowing a clear image to be obtained. The barium is contained in a thick white liquid called Picolax which the patient is provided with prior to the procedure.

Instructions for patients receiving a barium enema examination

The morning before the examination, take the 1st sachet of Picolax before breakfast (but no later than 8:00am). Dissolve the powder in a little water. The solution will become hot, wait 5 minutes. Add cold water and stir. Drink the mixture. Take the 2nd sachet of Picolax about 3 hours after lunch (following the same directions). You may drink as much fluid as necessary.

Advice on diet

Breakfast (after 1st sachet of Picolax):
One boiled egg - not more than one slice of white bread with honey (not jam or marmalade). One cup of tea or coffee without milk, but sweetened if required.

Mid-morning 10:30am:
One cup of tea or coffee without milk, but sweetened if liked (no food).

Lunch 12:00- 1:30pm:
One small portion of grilled or poached (not fried) fish or chicken with a little cooked white rice, followed by plain yoghurt or clear jelly. No potatoes, vegetables or fruit. A cup of tea or coffee without milk but sweetened if liked. Drink plenty of water.

Supper 7:00- 9:00pm:
Clear soup or meat extract drinks may be taken, but no solid food.

No further food is allowed until after the examination, but you may drink as much water as required.
